The Best SF website was launched on April 19th 2000 with the aim of helping to promote the best in short Science Fiction.

For the best part of ten years prior to that I had been reading a lot of short SF (mostly the Dozois anthologies and older Years Best collections) and had been adding details of those stories onto a PC database. This was primarily to help me recollect what stories I had read by particular authors, and to help me with those nagging questions like 'What was that story about the whales....' And also because I'm a librarian, and we do that kind of thing.

After after a year or two

• I began the Best SF Gateway to online short SF, with over 500 links to some high quality short SF online
• I started reviewing magazine fiction and set up Best SF Reviews
• I migrated the 700 stories which were previously on the Best SF database into the Reviews section

And in May 2007 I started Best SF Presents, through which I hope to make available high quality short SF.
